About the Organization
Semilla Nueva helps communities gain economic independence and rejuvenate their land through hands-on education and collaborative sustainable agriculture projects. Guatemala is the most malnourished country in the Western Hemisphere, and farmers there are facing extreme soil erosion and a vicious debt cycle from buying chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We work one-on-one with small farmers in coastal communities in Guatemala to establish sustainable agriculture techniques such as green manures, agroforestry, no-till agriculture, and composting, so that they can rebuild their soil organically in a way that will increase their crop yield, making it possible to both turn a profit and feed themselves and their families. In this way, Semilla Nueva strives for both international food security and environmental sustainability through the work we do.
