Walking With Angels

By Matt Dayka for Vitamin Angels

Years of research have already been conducted. A fancy, unknown cure is not necessary. Billions of dollars are not needed to fund it. Vitamin A supplementation has been proven an effective, simple and inexpensive intervention that can save millions of lives. It is Vitamin Angels’ mission to reduce child mortality worldwide by connecting essential nutrients, especially vitamin A, with infants and children under five. Essential nutrients enable young immune systems to fight infectious diseases, helping children attain good health and the opportunity to lead meaningful and productive lives.

After traveling through six countries documenting various programs, what I love most about working with Vitamin Angels is the positivity behind it all. By simply helping children to be healthy, an upward trend is started. Children who feel well do better in school. The more educated have more opportunity. Studies have even shown that healthier families have fewer children. Vitamin Angels wanted to continue this theme into the look and feel of their organization, and I was delighted to join the effort. Despair and poverty, although powerful, were not the images Vitamin Angels wanted to represent their work. They felt the smiles and joy they create better suited the cause. Our serendipitous finding of each other seemed to be a perfect fit. They needed a photographer who was willing to endure difficult travel and show respect for local cultures. I have always dreamed of such experiences and longed to use my photography for a greater purpose.
