Drink Local Drink Tap (DLDT), aims to create societal change at the level of the individual through education and the arts to reconnect people to local water around the globe. To assist in that mission, I have been working to document the current conditions that exist for the children of St. Bonaventure Primary School in Mulajje, Uganda, where DLDT is planning to build clean water facilities. We have shared their stories with supporting partners and potential donors through photography.

I was inspired to get involved with DLDT after an experience in Senegal. On a morning walk on the beach, I encountered a gigantic trash heap piled up in an inlet around the bend from where I was staying. The same water from which the locals get their food is polluted with plastic waste and toxic chemicals, simply because the surrounding village lacks the infrastructure to dispose of the trash properly. Walking back to the hotel, I watched a woman come out of her home with a bucket of urine and toss it in waves.

I understand that the world’s oceans, seas, rivers and lakes connect us all. We all drink from the same well, so to speak, and what happens halfway around the world impacts us here at home. I’ve seen it first-hand in other parts of the world. So, I fully support Drink Local Drink Tap’s efforts to reconnect people worldwide to the precious liquid that quenches our thirst and energizes the food we grow. Water is life.
