VIV DEBOU! (Live standing up! In Haitian Creole)

By William Daniels for Handicap International

The earthquake that hit Haiti on the 12th of January killed and injured hundreds of thousands of people. Handicap International is one of the main organizations providing aid to injured persons and amputees in Haiti, primarily through the fitting of orthopedic materials. The organization sent me to Haiti a few days after the disaster and two times later to document both the general situation and their emergency activities. Following the wave of shocking images and intensive media coverage that often accompanies this kind of tragedy, the victims risked to be forgotten. Handicap International and I decided to offer another, longer-term, view by focusing on the personal and collective experiences of those who are rebuilding their lives and more generally, on a human scale, the physical, psychological and social challenges involved in rebuilding Haitian society.

I am very glad for this collaboration with Handicap International, as it is for me one of the best non-governmental organizations working on emergency issues on injured people and specially amputees.

Handicap International use these images to raise awareness in Europe and North America through their website, events, mailing, publications etc..
