Using Computers to Help Children in the Hospital

By Bhaskar Dasgupta for IT4CH

While very high quality healthcare for our sick children is readily available in the UK, good mental and intellectual care for our long term or terminally ill children can well be improved. IT4CH charity was setup many years ago to solicit older laptops/pc’s from organizations, train unemployed teenagers and to service the equipment and finally provide them to various hospital schools in the UK.

It was extraordinary to see how these children’s faces light up when they get their hands on a laptop connected to the internet, while being bed ridden. The equipment also allowed them to edit videos they shot of their surroundings. Doctors told us that we help improve the quality of their hospital stay by making it more interesting and by challenging them with school or computer related activities. Being sick does not equal being bored or ignored.

A three way benefit! The donating firms recycle their equipment. Young unemployed adults learn skills and finally and most importantly, terminally/long term ill children in hospital receive dedicated PCs/Laptops.
