Dragonfly Dance Experiment (DDE) is a non-profit, professional dance company based in Maryland. It was founded in 2006 by Megan Morse Jans because of her desire to bring the art of dance into the community and in particular, into the lives of children who might not otherwise be exposed to its gifts. DDE produces free local performances and also partners with organizations such as D.A.R.E. Dance to bring the inspirational influence of dance into schools. Through these programs, children are exposed to contemporary dance and experience a supportive opportunity for creative expression.

Through my involvement with DDE I have seen that dance is not only a beautiful art for the observer to enjoy. Dance also has a powerful ability to ignite positive change within the dancer and to invite individuals to connect both to themselves and each other. As an artist I am passionate about observing and documenting transformation in daily life, especially in the local communities around me. This passion sparked my desire to contribute to DDE’s mission through my art of photography.

The photographs submitted capture moments in DDE’s dance piece “Thread,” which explores isolation and connection and changing inter-personal relationships in a cyber-driven world. The images share the depth of meaning and quality in the company’s choreography and talent, and importantly provide a tool to increase interest in their mission and in turn raise funds to support projects such as D.A.R.E. Dance.
