The Seven Circles Foundation is an educational organization established to promote and support spiritual practices based on the ancient ways of Native American Indigenous People. The Foundation brings these practices to the community at large to improve the quality of life for all. It takes guidance from Native American Elders, making their teachings available to the community and providing philanthropic programs to inform, nurture, and support all members of our global community. To this end the foundation host ceremonies led by, or under the direction of, Native Elders, such as Sweat Lodges and Sacred Pipe Ceremonies. These Ceremonies are available to all who wish to attend, without charge.
The photo story, “The Wahpepah Connection,” portrays a journey from California to rural Native America with the Foundation’s Elder, Fred Wahpepah (81), and his youngest daughter, Kashaokiwaki, (Kasha,18).
Through the month long journey, Kasha discovers the connection between herself and her cultural heritage resulting a newfound understanding and pride in her identity.
I chose to document Seven Circles and this project because of my curiosity into Native America and the spiritual path called the “Red Road.” Because Seven Circles opens their arms to all, their work helps to maintain a dying culture and raise the awareness of important issues that affect the daily livelihood of modern Native Americans. Through my work and collaboration with Kasha, I helped raise $4500 for their travels, publish a book of her experiences and raise awareness and build support for the community.
